GROTON — The Inland Wetlands Agency has approved an application by Wal-Mart to expand its current store at 150 Goldstar Highway (Route 184) by about 33%.
The decision at the Sept. 8, 2010, IWA meeting was unanimous.
The giant retailer’s expansion plan encountered no visible public opposition, in contrast to its earlier application to build a new supercenter near the Groton Utilities drinking water reservoir system. That plan would have involved closing the 150 Goldstar Highway location. The earlier application was abandonned in January of last year in the face of heavy pushback from regulatory authorities and the community, concerned about possible impacts on water.
Wal-Mart’s plan still requires approval of the Planning Commission.
